In How the Marquis Got His Coat Back, Neil Gaiman continues the Marquis de Carabas' story from the events of his novel Neverwhere. The Marquis' adventures takes him through more of London Below, introducing a two separate cults, one ruled by The Mushroom and the other by Shepherds, as well as the Marquis' brother Peregrine and an old enemy, the Elephant. Gaiman offers a glimpse of how the Marquis defined himself, writing, "The Marquis had known whom he had wanted not to be, when he was a boy...He had, instead, wanted to be elegant, elusive, brilliant and, above all things, he had wanted to be unique" (p. 33).How the Marquis Got His Coat Back originally appeared in the short story collection Rogues, edited by George R.R. Martin. This particular edition will be a joy to fans of Gaiman's work and could serve as a good introduction to new readers, though it does contain minor spoilers for Neverwhere. Currently, it is only available through British booksellers.
