The seventeenth Proceedings continues the society's tradition of French historical studies by distinguished scholars. This work is particularly strong on essays relating to New France, including Canada, Louisiana, Saint-Domingue, and Africa. The following topics are examined: Indian diplomacy, military history, economic history, the progress of the Quebec place-name dictionary, Ancient Regime slavery in the Caribbean, deserters in Colonial Louisiana, eighteenth-century fears of a Jesuit New Paraguay, the social history of Brazzaville (Africa), and the treatment of De Gaulle's African policy by the American press.
