From Doon with Death : (A Wexford Case) Paperback
by Ruth Rendell
Part of the Wexford series
The first book to feature the classic crime-solving detective, Chief Inspector Wexford.
No one believed Mr Parsons' fears for his missing wife.
Until two days later she was discovered in the woods, her face swollen and her clothes damply clinging to her lifeless body.
With no useful witnesses and a victim known only for her mundane life, Chief Inspector Wexford has just one clue: a lipstick found at the scene.
To find the killer, Wexford must first discover a motive. Because what he can't understand is how such an unassuming woman became the victim of such a passionate and violent crime.

I may have read this book before many years ago but didn't remember it. I didn't realise until I'd finished that it was the first book. It was written in the 60s and you can tell this by its thinness (golly novels are fat nowadays) and by the motivation of the murder. I doubt modern audiences would have much trouble in working it out.I still enjoyed it though and because I remember the TV series, Wexford and Burden were full characters to me already so I didn't feel they were lacking.
