Description

Well-known in the shooting and racing worlds, as well as a popular figure in many of the distinguished London clubs, Bobby McAlpine may have come from a wealthy background, but he certainly had to work hard after leaving school at the age of 17 in 1950 to make his mark in the family engineering firm, Alfred McAlpine.

The company expanded - at one point building over 20% of new roads in Britain - and Bobby worked his way up to be appointed Deputy Chairman in the mid 60's and Chairman from 1983 to 1992.

Additional involvements included an active role in the Federation of Civil Engineers and other company directorships.

He was also the co-founder and is now Chairman of Haynes, Hanson & Clark, wine merchants.

In addition to his business commitments, he wrote close to 40 obituaries for The Daily Telegraph between 1992 and 2005.

A keen racing man, he has owned racehorses since 1956 and won many major races - the Ascot Gold Cup, Champion Stakes, B&H Gold Cup (now the Juddmonte) and the Supreme Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham.

He has been a member of the Jockey Club since 1976 and director of Aintree from 1988 to 2007. Bobby was named as one of the 100 Best Shots of all time in The Field magazine in the 2008 and currently runs the Llanarmon shoot in North Wales, which is listed as one of the best 50 sporting estates in Britain.

A member of a number of clubs including Whites, Turf, the Portland and the MCC anda former High Sheriff of Cheshire - Bobby lives in the county near Tarporley with his wife, Angela.
