Born in 1870, Glicenstein is one of the pioneering sculptors responsible for reviving the art of direct carving and is an artist who adheres to techniques that respect the integrity of the medium and material. His major contribution to twentieth-century art is the adoption of direct carving in wood, rather than the practice of primarily casting in bronze. His works are in collections throughout Europe and America and include The Polish Museum of America; Rapperswil Castle, Rapperswil; National Museum, Krakow, Poland; Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel; Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, DC; the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.
