Having just read and loved Belle, I was keen to read this book straightaway, being its sequel. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next to Belle, and found The Promise to be another book that I just couldn't put down. You could read it as a standalone book, but I think a lot would be lost if you hadn't read Belle first. In The Promise, Belle Cooper has become Belle Reilly, and she has the hat shop she has always dreamed of when war breaks out in 1914. The war takes her to France to work as an ambulance driver, and throws her back into the path of a man for whom she had strong feelings. She finds herself torn between two men.Lesley Pearse never disappoints and has written another riveting read. So easy to get through and yet packed full of excitement, passion, heartbreak and adventure. She writes epic sagas that always grip me from start to finish. Excellent read and highly recommended.
