Description

Three-volume box set chronicling the history of the British motorcycle.

In the nineteenth century the industrial revolution in Britain resulted in an upswing in the motorbike industry.

However, of the fifty manufacturers featured here who had come to prominence by the end of the 1920s, only the Triumph is still going strong.

The 1930s onwards proved to be a golden era for British motorbikes, with BSA, Norton, AJS, Triumph, Matchless, Vincent and Velocette going from strength to strength.

The Second World War proved to be a boon for the industry, with thousands of bikes required by the Allied forces, and when the conflict was over the first ever World Championship Series was staged.

Although the Italians were overtaking Britain in the racing arena throughout the 1950s and 1960s, bikes were still selling well back home.

However, the technological advances by Japan in the Seventies and Eighties spelt the end for Britain's domination of the industry.

Today, only the Triumph remains as the standard bearer for British motorcycles.
