Three Foundations for Marriage - Body, Soul, Spirit

It takes a solid foundation to build a skyscraper. We have building codes that lay out the structural requirements and inspectors to make sure things are done according to code. The solid foundation of a marriage is found in our code book, the Bible. Jesus said build your house on the solid foundation of his Word or else your foundation will crumble and your house will be swept away by the torrential rains of life. (Mt 7:24-27)

A solid foundation is the secret to a solid marriage. Actually, there are three foundations in marriage that reflect the three parts of an individual: Spirit, Soul, and Body. "Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole **spirit and soul and body** be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Th 5:23, emphasis added) Since we were married God sees us as "one flesh"; therefore, the elements of the individual apply to the married couple - Spirit, Soul, and Body.

We are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body. All three parts of our being, and marriage, must be rightly aligned with God's purpose for a stable life and marriage. There are no exceptions. The closer we are to God's purpose, the closer we are to a happy, healthy, and stable life and marriage.

**SPIRIT** - The spirit's foundation is Christ. He is our hope of glory after we are born of the Spirit by grace through faith. ( Col 12:27; Jn 3:3) In a Christian marriage, Jesus becomes a covenant member, foundational member, of our one flesh union.

**SOUL** - The soul's foundation is prayer. Prayer is communion with God in the power of the Spirit. Prayer stabilizes the soul's attributes: mind, will, and emotions. In marriage, praying together, and for one another, is the key to communion and communication. (Rm 8:26)

**BODY** - The body's foundation is sexual morality. In other words, the realization we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit and are set apart for practical holiness. In marriage, our physical foundation is sexual fulfillment in one another; in the words, "one flesh". Jesus says, once married, we are no longer two but one, one flesh. (1 Co 6:19; Mt 19:5,6; Gen 2:24)

All three parts of our being, and marriage, must have a solid foundation in order to thrive. If you have Christ but not a vital prayer life then the winds of life will threaten your faith. If you have Christ and a good prayer life but not a fulfilling physical relationship then your marriage will rest on shaky ground. If we have a great sex life but no prayer together then our marriage will not withstand the next earthquake of life.

We assume, in this book, that you have Christ and are praying for your marriage. If you're Christians and pray for one another but still feel something is missing then perhaps sexual fulfillment is the next foundation to shore up.
