Description

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility.

The object of this manual is to provide a fairly complete course of methodical teaching in drawing, as required in Elementary schools by the Department of Science and Art.

It is universally admitted by all who have either to supervise or to examine the work done in schools, that there is abundant room for improvement in the method of teaching this important subject.

The methods, hints, and suggestions given, are the outcome of an extensive practical experience in Elementary Schools, Art Night Classes, and Schools of Art; and although doubtless familiar to some, the author ventures to hope that they will be of material assistance to many who may not have had the opportunity of receiving a special training in drawing.

The book contains about 700 illustrations, which have been specially drawn for the purpose.

The Freehand examples, which are mostly shown in stages, may be divided into three sections, viz., Conventional Ornament, Plant Forms, and Common Objects.

Many are original drawings, others are based upon examples from the Illustrated Syllabus, Dyce's Drawing Book, Examination Tests, Casts of Ornament, &c.

They are selected to illustrate definite principles which the teacher may readily apply to other figures.
