Nel sud della regione centrale di Cuba si trova una delle principali zone montuose del paese: le montagne Guamuhaya, spesso chiamate El Escambray.

Con un'estensione di 80 km e orientato da est a ovest, questo sistema orografico costituisce un importante centro di evoluzione del biota cubano (Samek, 1973; Iturralde-Vinent, 1988).

La fauna del ragno che abita i Monti Guamuhaya, nella regione centro-meridionale dell'isola di Cuba, e composta da 239 specie appartenenti a otto ordini e 55 famiglie, con Araneae (194 specie, 40 famiglie) e Opiliones (20 specie, sette famiglie) che sono le piu diverse.

Tra gli elementi di maggiore interesse ci sono 66 endemismi locali, alcuni dei quali sono limitati a una sola grotta.

Il Gaucelmus augustinus spider Keyserling, 1884 (Nesticidae) costituisce un nuovo record per la fauna di Cuba.

Numerose specie sono registrate qui, per la prima volta, per Guamuhaya.
