Description

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility.

You want to secure a photograph in which the lights and shades on the final bit of paper shall accurately reproduce the lights and shades of the subject be fore the lens.

Take up any print or photograph and you will find an ex ample of what your subject might be.

There is every gradation between black and white in the picture, so blended to gether and so broken up into small frag ments that it is difficult to say Here is a patch of full black, here a dark tone, here a light tone, and here full light or white.

So to simplify matters I put before you an exceedingly simple sub ject in which only four tones occur, and there are good, broad patches of each of them.
