Situated at a strategic point on the south coast of England, Portchester was an important defensive site from the Roman period onwards.
This volume reports on extensive excavations at the site in the 1960s and 1970s, and describes Norman additions to the Roman defences, a 12th Century Augustinian priory, and a 16th century naval storehouse.
