Rationalism and Poetry : The Asilo Sant'Elia by Giuseppe Terragni, Hardback Book

Rationalism and Poetry : The Asilo Sant'Elia by Giuseppe Terragni Hardback

Part of the Ashgate Studies in Architecture series

Hardback

Description

Giuseppe Terragni was one of the leading architects of the Rationalist movement - a modernist movement set in the context of Fascist Italy.

This book examines in detail Terragni's Asilo d"Infanzia, which is considered - along with the Casa del Fascio and the Giuliani Frigero Apartments - to be one of his masterpieces.

Unlike these other two buildings which were constructed under severe political pressures, the Asilo was built when Terragni lived in Como and was able to design free from his usual political constraints.

The book not only examines the building itself, but also the other issues that surrounded it. It addresses the relationship between the Asilo and Terragni's other projects; its position within the Italian Rationalist Movement; and the building's formal analysis.

Using a series of analytical diagrams, it not only provides a detailed exploration of the building but also breaks new ground by showing how Terragni utilized history as an effective design tool, thereby giving a deeper understanding of his design process more generally.
