Hermann Schlueter was an outstanding journalist and historian of German-American socialism.

In Zuerich he co-edited the Sozial- demokrat in the 1880's and in New York he was chief-editor of the Volkszeitung from 1890 to 1919.

In his book he surveys the earliest utopian socialists, writes extensively about Wilhelm Weitling's activities, discusses the press and various organizations founded by German socialist immigrants, etc.

Schlueter's book is a valuable historical source because he often quotes from documents and newspapers which are unavailable today.

Hermann Schlueter war ein hervorragender Journalist und Historiker des deutschamerikanischen Sozialismus.

In Zuerich war er um 1880 Mitherausgeber des Sozialdemokrat und in New York Chefredakteur der Volkszeitung von 1890 bis 1919.

In seinem Buch gibt er u.a. einen Ueberblick ueber die ersten, utopischen Sozialisten, schreibt ausfuehrlich ueber die Aktivitaeten Wilhelm Weitlings und bespricht die Presseorgane und die ver- schiedenen Organisationen gegruendet von den deutschen sozialistischen Einwanderern. Schlueters Buch ist eine wertvolle historische Quelle, da er oft aus Dokumenten und Zeitungen zitiert, die heute nicht mehr verfuegbar sind.
