The indefatigable labours of Chinese commentators have alone rendered the present translation of the Sayings of Confucius a possibility.

Next to them I am most indebted to Legge's Confucian Ana lects, a book that is invaluable to the student, although defective as a translation.

For much of the information in my notes, and for most of the facts given in the Introduction, I have to thank Legge.
