For twenty-five years he lived and worked in York and was for many years the editor of the journal of the York Archaeological Trust.

He was a committee member of the Yorkshire Architectural and York Archaeological Society, The Rowntree Society and is currently an Honorary Visiting Fellow in the Centre for Medieval Studies, a department of the University of York.

He has recently been appointed as a Historic Building Advisor within the Civil Service.
