Description

As well as having the right skills, knowledge and understanding, safe and responsible driving is also about recognising that we'll generally get where we want to go to more quickly, and in one piece, if we co-operate with other road users. It's about understanding that others may not be as able or as experienced as we are. And, however skilled we think we are or however long we've been driving, we can all learn and improve. Recent changes to The Highway Code underline how we must look out for the most vulnerable. Its 'hierarchy of road users' sets out how those driving the biggest vehicles have a greater responsibility towards others - like pedestrians, motorcyclists, horse riders and cyclists. Our individual driving skills should also include how to handle modern driving technology. And, if we want to make transport safer, greener and healthier, we need to understand how to reduce the impact on the environment. We've designed this publication to explain everything you need to know to drive safely and sustainably - whether you're learning to drive or are a more experienced driver. And if you're a learner (ideally with an approved driving instructor), this will help you to understand when you're ready to take your test. Driving is enjoyable, and a valuable contribution to our social and working lives. I want all drivers to gain the maximum benefit from their driving. I want them to avoid the heartbreak that comes when things go wrong and to understand their responsibility towards other road users, the environment and society. I strongly encourage you to read this publication carefully and follow our guidance. That way, you'll be prepared for a lifetime of safe and sustainable driving. Mark Winn, Chief Driving Examiner for the Driver and Vehicle Driving Standards Agency.
