With an introduction by Kevin J Hayes who is Professor of English at the University of Central Oklahoma and the recipient of the Virginia Library History Award, this work includes an essay on "Poe's Reputation" by Scott Peeples, who is Professor of English at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, who has also written two books on Poe.

There is an essay on "Poe and Identity" by Louis A Renza who is a Professor of English at Dartmouth College and former Chair of the Dartmouth English Department.

There is a short essay entitled "Edgar Allan Poe: A Difficult Life".
