Description

Kirkby-in-Ashfield, as Gerald Lee comments in his introduction, is steeped in history.

For centuries this area was agricultural, but in the latter half of the nineteenth century it was transformed by mining.

With the advent of the collieries came the railways, and prosperity and population began to increase.

These photographs, many of which have not been published before, build up a vivid visual impression of life in the Kirkby area from the 1850s onwards.

The authors have created a fascinating record of changing costume and custom, transport and trading, sport and entertainment, as well as streets and buildings. Kirkby & District From Old Photographs, originally published in 1995, will evoke nostalgic memories for many, and will give pleasure to everyone who knows this part of Nottingham.
