Einen Preis fur Dichtung hatte Joseph Pulitzer ursprunglich nicht vorgesehen. Erst eine Initiative der Poetry Society of America gab den Ansto zur Grundung dieses Preises, der 1922 zum ersten Mal verliehen wurde. Der Supplement-Band dokumentiert die gesamte Entwicklungsgeschichte der Preisverleihungen in dieser Kategorie. Die Darstellung basiert hauptsachlich auf vertraulichen Jury-Protokollen aus dem Pulitzer-Preis-Buro an der New Yorker Columbia-Universitat. Der 23. Band bildet den Abschluss der Reihe "The Pulitzer Prize Archive", in der samtliche Kategorien des renommierten Ehrungssystems dargestellt worden sind: sowohl die Preise in journalistischen Bereichen als auch jene in den literarischen Kategorien Sachbuch, Belletristik, Theater und Musik.
