Over the past four decades, Kappe has created a succession of powerful, 'woodsy' post-and-beam houses on hillside sites in West Los Angeles, inspired by Japanese and Craftsman traditions.

The seed was his own studio/house, in which massive fir beams span and leap beyond six concrete towers that burrow down to bedrock.
