Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility.
There was little need of the labour of collation, after the very accurate text of Professor Lassen.
I have not failed, however, to compare the reading of the different copies, and have noticed a few Of the variations: none of them are of any great importance.
Where collation was most wanted, it was unfortunately not practicable, there being but a single copy of the Bhtishya of gaurapada in my possession.
The manuscript was luckily tolerabl y correct, but it was doubtful in some places, and clearly faulty in others; and I may not have always succeeded in rightly correcting, or in accurately interpreting it.
With regard to typographical errors in the present edition of text and comment, I trust they will not be found very inexcusable, especially when it is known that the work was for the greater part necessarily carried on at a distance from me, during my absence in London, and that it is the first publication in Sanscrit printed at the Press of the University of Oxford.
