Lay Down My Sword and Shield Paperback
Part of the Hackberry Holland series
A powerful novel of conflict, history and shadows from the past ... by the bestselling, acclaimed author of THE TIN ROOF BLOWDOWN.'As I stood there on my front porch that hot, breathless July day, leaning against the column with the six bullet holes, now worn and smooth, I could see Hack's whitewashed marker under the pin oaks in the Holland family cemetery ...

Hard-drinking ex-POW and wealthy, progressive Democrat, he stands in the long shadow cast by his ancestors.

I think I'm unusual in that I have read this book before any other Hack Holland books and was therefore not reading it to find out any back story, Once again, I was blown away by Burke's writing. I have seen others criticise his long descriptions but I don't feel they are overdone as they are so good. Having said that, I found Hack Holland a truly obnoxious character. It is certainly tough to read a book where the main character is a good guy but a complete git too.
