Description

Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of the preservation of wilderness in the USA.

His friendshio with Jeanne Carr had a lifelong influence on his career as a naturalist and writer and he came to trust her as his "spiritual mother".

They first met in 1860 when Muir, aged 22, was a student at the University of Wisconsin and he became a frequent visitor to the Carrs' home, sharing Jeanne's love of plants.

The friendship lasted 30 years and this collection of letters from Muir was first published in a limited edition in 1915, the year following his death.
