Because Lefty did not feel anything like it. Instead, he was overcome by extreme joy. The thought that he was about to get rid of this nuisance could have made him sing with glee.

The novel Gunman's Reckoning is a superb illustration of Max Brand's writing.

The combination of love, lies, adventure, and humor creates a story that is immensely readable.
