Ebenezer Hoar was admitted to the bar in 1835, and served the law at the bar and on the bench for more than a half century. He was a staunch Whig and a proponent of abolition of slavery. He served as Attorney General of the United States for more than a year during the first term of President Grant. He was also a member of the House of Representatives in 1872 and 1873 and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court.
