Description

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Carrie Nelson has just married the man of her dreams, handsome trauma surgeon Dr. Nate Holden. The couple lives and works on the Blackfeet reservation near Glacier National Park. In love, with a new home, they are anxious to start a family. As month after month goes by without a pregnancy, Carrie becomes more concerned. It is even more difficult for her because she delivers so many babies on the reservation. After a newborn Blackfoot girl is abandoned at the federal hospital, Carrie desperately wants the baby, and she and Nate apply to be foster parents. They would like to adopt, but federal legislation enacted to prevent adoption by non-Native Americans is against them. It won't be easy, but they are determined to fight. They are shocked when the tribe's medicine woman is adamant that she will help them keep the baby. She says she has her reasons. Meanwhile, the baby's birth family wants her back, though this seems the worst possible outcome for the baby. As Carrie struggles with anger and fear that she will lose baby Nuttah, an elderly she-wolf continues to appear in her life, providing comfort. Over the next year, Carrie and Nate are in for the fight of their lives to keep the little girl they love. They are helped by their friends, some of whom are tribal leaders. Others are coworkers from the federal hospital or patients who rely on them. Carrie and Nate have devoted their lives to the Blackfeet people and want to spend their lives with them. Yet it may not be in their best interests to stay on the reservation. Nate's career as a trauma surgeon is needed in bigger cities. Carrie's father would like her to return to his group practice in Philadelphia. If they lose the baby, how will they bear the pain and remain on the reservation?
