It grew late and the girls went to bed. Hour by hour, a sickening feeling grew in Abbie’s belly. She called Sam’s office repeatedly, but the phone just kept ringing. She heard his threatening words in her brain, “I’m tired of doing everything that other people want. I want to take care of myself for a change and do what makes me happy.”

The thoughts in her head spun in circles. She tossed and turned all night and did not sleep for a minute. Sleep was impossible. By the time morning came, she ached miserably with fatigue and pregnancy hormones. Then at 7:30 a.m., the phone rang, breaking the numbing household silence.

“Hi, it’s Sam. How are you doing?” Then too quickly, “I’m sorry I couldn’t get home last night. There was something I had to do.”

"Where were you? Why didn't you call?" Just silence until he said, "I hope you have a lovely day." Then he hung up.
