Arpeggio (ar-PEJ-ee-o) "The notes of a chord played in succession rather than simultaneously." It's part scale, part chord.
"Moonlight Sonata" is one of Beethoven's well loved pieces. Most of it is entirely based on arpeggiated triads.
"In the Mood" by Joseph Garland has been recorded by about 80 different artists. The hook melody line that so many people remember is based on arpeggiated triads.
Mark Knopfler's guitar solo on "Sultans of Swing" consistently finds its way into various respected "Top 10 Greatest Guitar Solos" type of lists. The most famous passage in the solo is based on arpeggiated triads.
