Sir Simon Rattle writes and presents this series of documentaries on music of the 20th century.

The series covers, among other topics, the musical revolution in Vienna at the turn of the 19th century, the move from melody towards tone colour and the influence of past music and other cultures on American composers.

Among the composers discussed are Wagner, Stravinsky, Debussy, Shostakovich, Gershwin, Cage, Schoenberg and Richard Strauss.

Rattle also conducts the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in performances of works from the era.
