The Superpowers and the Third World : Turkish-American Relations and Cyprus Paperback / softback

Part of the Exxon Educational Foundation Series on Rhetoric and Political Discourse series

Paperback / softback

Description

The thesis of this volume is that the study of power and influence on the contemporary world scene requires attention to both the influence of the superpowers on the lesser powers and the influence of the latter on the former.

A process of mutual influence is established that requires attention to the two sides of the equation.

In the present study, the United States unquestionably exerts a significant influence on Turkey but, particularly in the 1970s, Turkey succeeded in influencing American foreign policy.

The author focuses on the factors most responsible for such influence including domestic politics, the strategic views of leaders, other events taking place in the world and the context of the relationship at a particular moment in history.
