Colin. May. Frank. Berenice. The Prime children grew up in a bleak country farm house called The Beacon.
Colin and Berenice married locally. May went to university in London, but came home within a year and never left again.

Excellent story which will affect anyone from a similar sized family, who has watched each sibling go their own way. Beautifully told, Susan Hill captures exactly how one sibling's actions can rock a family to its core. I found it especially chilling as it was not unlike a family I knew of growing up.....!

Wow! This short novel was amazing. This is the story of four siblings....one of whom moves to the city and writes a memoir of childhood abuse. Only it isn't true. This novel tells of the impact on the author and on his siblings. The ending...the very last line...hits like a punch to the heart.
