Erin Winslow and Z89 Marcon attend two very different schools, and we discover over the course of the trilogy that ZEPHYR School, which Z89 attends, was originally set up by the Department of Education to improve the learning of children. However, ZEPHYR has become one of many schools where experimentation and indoctrination take place. A ruthless group, calling themselves TREFOIL, are programming young people to fight against the establishment status quo. It becomes a race against time to save democracy and to have the right to live in a civilized world. In Unfolding the Truth, Erin, an ordinary 15-year-old girl, discovers her family have lied and strikes out on a journey searching for the truth, while Z89 just tries to stay alive.
