Eyeless in Cleethorpes : The Life and Art of Peter Brannan RBA Paperback / softback
by Malcolm Moyes
Paperback / softback
Description
Lincolnshire artist, Peter Brannan (1926-1994), exhibited his work in London throughout the 1950's and 1960's, in a number of successful one-man shows, as well as at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln, throughout the second half of the C20th. He established his reputation as a painter of the East Coast, in particular his home town of Cleethorpes, but he was also well known for his evocative urban street scenes, based on Lincoln and the town of Newark, where he worked for thirty years.
Greatly influenced by the great post-Impressionist painters, Eduard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, Brannan also produced many interiors and still lifes of exquisite beauty in the last decade of his life. His work is held in various public collections, as well as in private collections throughout the United Kingdom and America. Drawing upon many unpublished sources, interviews and the Brannan family archive, this is the first full-length study of a painter now thought to be one of the finest artists produced by Lincolnshire in the C20th.
The book also includes a comprehensive list of the artist's exhibition work between 1943 and 1994, which will be an indispensable starting point for any future research on Peter Brannan and the circle of Lincolnshire artists with which he was connected
