Gilles de Gouberville (1521–1578) was the perfect representative of the country gentry of the Renaissance, as both Lord of Mesnil-au-Val and Gouberville in Normandy, France, and lieutenant in charge of the waterways and forests of the viscounty of Valognes.

His life and views are studied by historians around the world because of the extraordinary richness of the journals he wrote between 1549 and 1562.

In these he recounts with exceptional precision the daily life of the inhabitants of the Cotentin Peninsula of the mid-16th century, giving the reader a window into the landscapes, life and preoccupations of this world.

The volume is accompanied by engaging illustrations by Kévin Bazot, offering a renewed vision of Gilles de Gouberville and his universe.
