Description
Young entrepreneurs in Fiji Islands are putting into practice new skills learned on an innovative retail skills development programme run by the Commonwealth Secretariat, the United Nations Development Programme and the Body Shop for indigenous people in the Pacific Islands.
The entrepreneurs come from a variety of backgrounds and their businesses cover a diverse range including surf shops, pharmacies, craft shops and art galleries.
In addition to training during the course, the participants visit businesses and try their hand in improving their margins.
For two years following their training the participants can sell their products at the Fiji Retail Enterprise Engine (FREE) shop which is located on an upmarket shopping mall in the capital, Suva.
Experts believe that it is in this two-year period that most new businesses fail and this business incubator gives then a chance to test and adapt their products in the market place.
The young entrepreneurs have now formed their own group, the Fiji Islands Young Entrepreneurs Association (FIYEA), and now give each other a hand in climbing up the corporate ladder.
