The Commission on Country Life was appointed by President Thyeodore roosevelt on 10 August 1908; on 23 January 1909 its report was presented to the president.

The purpose of the commission was to determine the status of country life in the United States, to point out its main deficiencies, and to suggest lines of action and inquiry that should be made by Congress, states, and other agencies in order that a better rural civilization might be developed. Originally published in 1944.
