The Folk Ballads of Ronnie Hawkins CD / Album
by Ronnie Hawkins
CD / Album
Description
Rockabilly icon Ronnie Hawkins will be forever associated with The Band, the Americana pioneers and former Bob Dylan backing group that helped Dylan 'go electric' on his controversial tour of 1966. And yet Hawkins had a soaring career of his own, particularly in Canada, where he scored a string of Top 10 hits in the late 50s and early 60s. The future members of The Band cut their teeth with Hawkins, playing the spit 'n' sawdust clubs on the Canadian circuit, and Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm were among the musicians that backed him on this 1960 album. Though it captures Hawkins spreading his wings and entering the burgeoning folk scene which would soon birth Dylan, 'The Folk Ballads of Ronnie Hawkins' doesn't stint on his powerhouse energy: his explosive arrangement of John Henry befits the legacy of that 'steel-driving man', while Hawkins' take on Gershwin's 'Summertime' simmers from the heat of his burning vocals.
