Successful copywriter Gordon Cromstock (Grant) shuns an offer of promotion and gives up his job to become a poet.

Unable to understand Cromstock's determination to embrace poverty, nor his obsession with the aspidistra as a symbol of respectability, his girlfriend, graphic artist Rosemary (Bonham-Carter), who has aspirations for marriage and a comfortable life, now fears for the future of the relationship.
