Widowed 70-somethings Alan Buttershaw (Derek Jacobi) and Celia Dawson (Anne Reid) become reacquainted after their respective grandsons create Facebook accounts for them. 60 years previously, during their teenage years, the two fell in love and, despite having since gone their separate ways in life, they find their feelings are as strong as ever.

However, Alan's daughter, Gillian (Nicola Walker), and Celia's daughter, Caroline (Sarah Lancashire), are nothing alike and are both dealing with their own issues, which proves problematic for their parents' rekindled romance.
