The extraneous matter, which the original work embraced, has been omitted; much extravagance, in regard both to sentiment and diction, has been corrected; and the whole has undergone a thorough revisal.
Nor is this all: Nineteen new articles, of which sixteen are altogether original, have been added; and the present volume may be considered rather as a new work than as the republication of one already before the world.
Its execution is not, I am aware, worthy of the important materials of which it is composed; yet I flatter myself, that, with all its imperfections, it will be regarded as constituting some addition, however slight, to the biographical literature of Scotland.<br><br>Of the numerous Lives which the volume includes, the subjects of several were but slightly connected with Galloway.
