Description

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility.

Nearly half a century has rolled by since Abbot Sweeney wrote of Father Baker's Life of Dame Gertrude More thus: This [work] was in two volumes; the second is unfortunately lost.

In this Life the Father describes the whole method of his guidance of his spiritual daughter.

It is full of the most practical instruction, and we cannot too deeply regret that any portion of such a work should be lost to us.

The first volume was accidentally picked up in Germany a few years ago; perhaps the second may yet be recovered.

The pious hope of the Abbot has been fulfilled.

Some years ago the Life of an Unknown Nun, as it was described in the catalogue, was picked up by a monk of Ampleforth Abbey for a trifling sum, and upon examination the volume was found to contain in manuscript the substance of Father Baker's Life of Dame Gertrude More, with a few passages here and there omitted by the copyist for the sake of brevity.

This precious work of Father Baker, by the courtesy of the Abbot of Ampleforth, I am now able to submit to the public for the first time.
