In 1912 he left England with Frieda Weekley, the wife of a professor and daughter of an aristocratic German family, the von Richtofens.

Her husband was to continue to threaten violence until finally succumbing to divorce two years later. The Fight for Barbara opens at the Theatre Royal Bath, with Rebecca Hall as Barbara.
