The Fight for Barbara, Paperback Book

The Fight for Barbara Paperback

Paperback

Description

When Barbara Tressidor leaves her wealthy husband and elopes to Italy with the son of a coal miner she has known for only three weeks, she sparks a scandal which strikes at the whole of polite British society and has a huge impact on her titled family.

In this exquisite comedy, each of the affected parties makes their way to the isolated Italian villa to do battle in the fight for Barbara.

Their displays of jealousy, incomprehension, common sense and emotion are charged with the humour and pathos of real life.

Whether Barbara will be persuaded to act with her head or her heart is uncertain until the very end.

Filled with extraordinary insight into the complexity of personal relationships which Lawrence showed in his great novels, Sons and Lovers, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lovers, The Fight for Barbara here receives its first ever production in its complete form.

Lawrence himselfdescribed the play as 'word for word true'.

In 1912 he left England with Frieda Weekley, the wife of a professor and daughter of an aristocratic German family, the von Richtofens.

Her husband was to continue to threaten violence until finally succumbing to divorce two years later. The Fight for Barbara opens at the Theatre Royal Bath, with Rebecca Hall as Barbara.
