Description

Dento-alveolar trauma includes injuries caused by an external impact to the dentition and its surrounding structures.

These injuries range from a simple contusion of the tooth to total dislocation of the tooth from the alveolar bone, termed tooth avulsion.

It is one of the most serious injuries, and the prognosis is very much dependent on: Action taken at the place of injury and promptly after the avulsion.

This book includes various diagnostics measures and also it provides important information regarding the pulpal and periodontal healing factors/mechanism, extra-alveolar time, endodontic therapy, administration of systemic antibiotics and adequate handling and maintenance of the tooth up to the moment of replantation are the conditions leading to a better prognosis.

The final decision regarding patient care remains primarily with the treating dentist.

However, the consent to implement the final decision rests with the patient, parent, or guardian.

For ethical reasons, it is important that the dentist provides the patient and guardian with pertinent information relating to treatment to ensure they are maximally involved in the decision making process.
