Description

Nutrition as a topic is far more vast than the simple promotion of good health and/or body composition. Because at some basic level food really is just fuel, the choices we make at the dinner table can have a profound effect on our performance in the gym, on the pitch, and any other athletic environment. While it may be the case that performance - even peak performance - can be achieved with a less than optimal diet (as evidenced by the eating habits of many top athletes) it is still the case that when all else is equal an athlete will get better results if a few key nutritional principles are adhered to. After all, sports nutrition has come a long way since the 80's, where the advice was little more than "Eat as much carbohydrate as possible and stay hydrated".

This book seeks to build upon The Art of Nutrition Coaching by showing you the means by which key nutrition principles, and the artful application of them, can apply specifically to those in a competitive athletic environment. The latter point is critical here and so while you read this book it's important to bear in mind all you have learned about environmental cues, motivation, readiness to change and proper communicative techniques. We must never forget that athletes are people, too, with all of the same barriers to success. This means that while you may expect an athlete to adhere to whatever nutritional approach you recommend without question, you'll quickly learn while working in this space that your assumption is incorrect.

Here we will cover various different sporting populations, specifically endurance athletes, team sport athletes, athletes that need to make weight for competition, and athletes preparing for a physique competition. We will also look in to the world of IPED use to help you become more informed and aware should a client ever bring the topic up with you.

While reading this book, keep in mind that each sport is chosen not only to illustrate itself, but also a wider principle. The information about training endurance sports, for example, can be used with footballers, or combined with what you already know about supporting muscle growth and recovery before being applied to Crossfit athletes or boxers who aren't currently in preparation for a fight. This book may be relatively short, but in combination with the previous BTN Academy modules and manuals you have a handbook for working with just about any athlete of any discipline.

Time to find out what makes an athlete tick.
