March : The Rise and Fall of a Motor Racing Legend Hardback

Hardback

Description

By the mid-1980s, March Engineering had become one of the great international motor racing success stories.

Of the 33 cars which started the 1984 Indianapolis 500 race, 29 had been built by March.

In America, March cars had also won both the IMSA and Atlantic Championships and back in Europe were about to win the first three Formula 3000 Championships, and to return to Formula One, the premier category in which Jackie Stewart had recorded the first Grand Prix victory for a March car way back in 1970.

Yet by 1989 March was on its knees, the American market had been lost, the F3000 project was over and the F1 team had been sold.

What went wrong and brought about March's collapse forms the final chapter in this story, in which the author was afforded the co-operation of all the principals of the company as he unravelled the hitherto hidden facts with brutal candour.

When originally published in 1989 under the title "Four Guys and a Telephone: The Story of March", the book ended with March at the crossroads and about to take a new direction with two new Indycar projects for Porsche and Alfa Romeo. Now the story has been completed, once again with the assistance of the people most closely involved.

The result is a tale of achievement and disappointment, supported by extensive appendices detailing all the technical descriptions, production figures and major race results of the cars, many of which have since found a new life in the burgeoning field of historic car racing.
