Part of the Linguistic Insights series

Hardback

Description

This volume aims to provide information aboutand interpretations of the concept of evidentialitylexically realized with certain verbs andapplied to the genre of medical posters.

Morespecifically, issues relating to how knowledgeis conveyed through language will be discussedand how evidence for such knowledge is linguisticallytransmitted in a set of specialised texts. This study uses some of the possibilities offeredby electronic corpora in conjunction with concordancetools, which allow quantitative analysis. Thanks to this quantitative analysis, followedby a qualitative interpretation of thefindings, we could detect the pragmatic functionthese evidential items have in contextual use, allowing us to see that evidentiality in medicaldiscourse is intended in a slightly different wayfrom general discourse.
