A little bit about us

"New Beacon Books is an independent specialist books shop. We specialise in children's books, history, literature, novels, poetry, culture and non-fiction by writers and publishers from Africa, Caribbean, South America, Asia, African America and Black Britain.

"New Beacon was founded in 1966 by John La Rose and Sarah White as one of the first black publishers in Britain and later as a bookseller. From its base in North London, the bookshop has become an institution with involvement in small and major events in the cultural and political life of Britain from the Caribbean Artists Movement, the International Bookfair of Radical Black and Third World Books and the archive the George Padmore Institute. We are more than a bookshop.

"We host events in the bookshop including book launches, book clubs and poetry readings please check our website and social media for details. Our international book service takes orders through the telephone, via email, web orders through our website or by walk-in customers. New Beacon also organises bookstalls and book exhibitions in schools, colleges, conferences, workplaces and other literary and cultural events.

"New Beacon Books will continue to fly the flag for small independent bookshops as long as we can. We will continue to provide an important service to children, young people and adults of education, knowledge, information, history, art and culture through books."

- Michael La Rose Director July 2020.
