Charming crook Paris Pitman (Douglas) is serving time for robbery in Arizona Territorial Prison.
Pitman is unable to get at the $500,000 he has stashed on the outside, but he has a cunning plan for his escape.
However, newly-appointed Warden Lopeman (Fonda) has a plan of his own: he wants to use Pitman to rally and unify the other prisoners in the name of reform.
Unfortunately for both Pitman and Lopeman, things do not go well.
