Review by

I picked this up by chance at a visit to a steam railway museum with my son and it's quite a little gem. Detective inspector Vignoles works for the fictional LNER police, solving crimes on the railway. Thoughtful, charming Vignoles is partnered with his smart, enthusiastic sergeant, Trinder. Together they are trying to catch a gang of ruthless money counterfeiters who are using the railway to move the money around. The author has done a fantastic job of bringing post-WW2 rural middle England to life. The descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of the railway are also excellent, I felt really immersed in the story. I felt the dialogue needed a bit of work as occasionally it felt a bit clunky. This was made up for by a quite thrilling climax set in a railway siding - the last twenty or thirty pages were almost un-put-downable!
